Rinat Gayanov: Our Goal is Improving Russian-Made Drilling Equipment
In late April the government of Sverdlovsk Region announced the results of the Urals Star Business Prizewinners 3rd regional contest. The authorities named Best Enterprise in Socioeconomic Results, Best Enterprise in Energy Saving, Best Exporter, etc. As already reported by UralPolit.Ru, ZAO (Closed Joint Stock Company) Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye got the award of the Best Enterprise in Socioeconomic Results within the Engineering Section. “The contest was a powerful stimulus to improve image of participating companies”, Victor Koksharov, Chairman of the Sverdlovsk Region government, said at the ceremony.
It should be noted, Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye was a contest participant for the first time. Nevertheless, its victory was unquestionable. Rinat Gayanov, Managing Director of Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye, met a reporter of UralPolit.Ru to tell about the efforts the company management had made to win, and the plans it now cherishes.
- What does the Urals Star Business Prizewinners award mean to you, and why do you think your company was found the best?
- No doubt, we still have much to do, improve and change as far as socioeconomic aspects are concerned. But it is important that at the moment the employees of our enterprise already are paid high salaries which are among the highest in Sverdlovsk Region and average 29,000 rubles for the company in general and 24,700 rubles for the manual workers.
Besides, due to a big inflow of orders we can open new vacancies. Our employees enjoy benefits of social security, we have set a medical assistance room and special hygiene rooms for female employees. We also take care of summer vacations for the children of our employees, while we use social insurance and medical insurance funds for the employees recreation at resorts and therapeutic facilities. This year, for example, about 100 children will spend their vacations in recreation camps. That is why I can state that we have done everything for the achievements by Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye to be recognized at the contest.
- Was it the first time you participated in the contest?
- Yes, it was the first time for us to take part in this particular contest. The contest currently known as Urals Star Business Prizewinners has a 15 years long history and hence it has become a tradition. This year, about 200 industrial enterprises from all over Sverdlovsk Region took part, and they all had to report the details of their socioeconomic progress (turnover, sales volume, investments scope, salaries, social benefit payments, etc.) and of their contribution to the overall development of Sverdlovsk Region.
Our company filled in the contest form and supplied the most explicit information and thus became the winner among engineering and military industrial enterprises with number of employees up to 1500 (we have 1200 employees at our plant).
- As far as I am aware, several applications for the contest participation could be filed. Had you had any suggestions to take part in the Best Enterprise in Energy Saving nomination, for example?
- Indeed, we were offered to take part in that nomination as well, but we decided we were not really ready yet for winning. Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye has just developed plan for and initiated implementation of activities aimed to reduce consumption of electricity, natural gas and other energy resources. I believe next year we will definitely submit all relevant documents to participate in the above nomination and will do our best to win two awards in two nominations.
And we have got every reason to expect another award, as at the moment we are in the process of replacing the lighting equipment in our workshops section three, which has been in operation since the 30s of the last century. The modern equipment will consume only a fraction of the current electricity consumption with its lighting efficiency being few times higher as compared to the obsolete lamps. Currently, the premises are heated with natural gas.
- As Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye is now rightfully considered to be the best company as far as its socioeconomic achievements are concerned, an important aspect of that is possibly your personnel. How significant is your employee turnover?
- Our personnel has stabilized and turned into a successful team. Some time ago we hired certain number of employees and now we in fact have no problems with the employee turnover, we do not hire any further workers. From now on we can allow ourselves to fill in vacancies on the basis of competitions, and we only hire one candidate out of 20 or 30.
- Regarding your prospect workers, what are the professional skills in most demand?
- At the enterprise, the specialists strongly sought for are machine tool operators and assembly workers who in two months time can produce a drilling unit. Besides, we have the biggest team of design engineers.
Generally speaking, the workers of all trades are in need, as we still lack them, because these days youngsters tend to get training and education in intellectual professions involving no manual labor. As the result, the average age of physical work employees has gone up while the number of such specialists decreased. No wonder such workers can choose the company they want to work for. We do appreciate that nevertheless many of them end up with working for out enterprise.
- What about the younger employees? Could one get some training at the factory while a student and then get a permanent full time job?
- There are over 200 employees aged under 35 who now work at the enterprise. One may say the percentage is not too high, but it is much higher as compared to one and a half years ago. Annually, we arrange training for up to 50 students of technical colleges and universities from Sverdlovsk Region, Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Tyumen and other areas. Depending on the year of their study, they can be employed as workers receiving some salary or operate as backup foremen or section managers. We have seen some students who got permanent employment with us after having done their training.
- What are the business plans Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye has for the near future?
- Our main target now is increasing production of drilling units up to 40 per annum, so we have production facilities and labor force getting ready for that. If the output goes up, next year we will think of arrangements for the second and third work shifts.
Out chief technology specialist has just returned from Germany where new modern machinery and equipment for the company were ordered. We will install new heating furnaces, electric ovens and other appliances. We expand one of our production units, install new equipment to welding and engineering workshops and thermal processing facilities. Currently, our production base is not just in Ekaterinburg, but in Tyumen as well, where we have a branch of Uralmash – Burovoye Oborudovaniye, the plant formerly known as Tyumen Shipbuilding Yard, which has been brought back to active operation by Integra Group. The branch now produces steelworks for drilling equipment with three of its manufacturing facilities operating at their full capacity. Stromneftemash plant in Kostroma is yet another production base. All together, we pursue our common goal of bringing the standards of the nationally produced drilling equipment to the highest requirements of the customers. We aim at increasing industrial output and improving the quality of our products. That will allow us to keep leading the industry.
